The M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS) is the military and police version of the Remington Model 700 rifle, which the United States Army adopted as its standard sniper rifle in 1988. It’s referred to as a “weapon system” because the package includes the rifle, a detachable telescopic sight, and various other accessories. A key design feature is its use of a “long action” bolt receiver. Although chambered for the shorter 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge, this long action allows the rifle to be reconfigured for dimensionally larger ammunition if needed. The M24 was originally equipped with a Leupold 10×42mm fixed-power scope and a detachable Harris bipod, though the scope was later updated.
