The SU-100 is a Soviet tank destroyer armed with a powerful D-10S 100 mm anti-tank gun housed in a fixed, casemate-style superstructure. It was used extensively during the final year of World War II and saw service for many years afterward with Soviet-allied armies across the globe. The vehicle’s creation was prompted by the obsolescence of its predecessor, the SU-85. While the SU-85 was an effective upgrade to the T-34 tank chassis, its 85 mm gun was soon matched by the new T-34-85 tank, necessitating a more powerful, dedicated tank destroyer. This led to the SU-100’s design, which centered around its formidable cannon, a weapon so successful it was later used on T-54/T-55 tanks.
