The Focke-Wulf Fw 190, nicknamed the “Shrike,” was a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft used extensively during World War II. Upon its 1941 operational debut, the Fw 190 proved superior to the British Spitfire Mk. V at low and medium altitudes, maintaining an edge until the introduction of improved Allied fighters. The Fw 190A’s primary weakness was reduced performance at high altitudes, which led to the development of later “long-nose” variants with different engines.
