The Karabiner 98 kurz, or Kar98k, is a German bolt-action rifle adopted in 1935 as the standard service weapon for the Wehrmacht. Chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge, it represented a final development in the long lineage of Mauser military rifles. The Kar98k was derived from earlier models, offering a shorter “kurz” design that was renowned for its reliability, safety, and an effective range of 500 meters with iron sights. Although newer semi-automatic rifles were later introduced, it remained the primary German infantry rifle until the end of World War II in 1945. Millions were captured by the Soviets and later distributed as military aid, leading to its continued use in conflicts worldwide.
