The Leopard 2 is a third-generation German main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s. Entering service in 1979 to replace the Leopard 1, it is used by Germany and over a dozen other European and non-European nations. The tank has two main development stages: earlier models up to the 2A4 standard have vertical turret armor, while the 2A5 and subsequent versions feature angled, arrow-shaped appliqué armor for enhanced protection. Key features across all variants include a Rheinmetall 120 mm smoothbore cannon, a digital fire control system with a laser rangefinder, advanced night vision, and a V12 twin-turbo diesel engine.
