A physical selector switch is used to change between these settings. The weapon was originally designed in the mid-1980s for the Austrian counter-terrorist unit Einsatz Kommando Kobra. It served as a test concept for a machine pistol to be used as a Personal Defense Weapon and to prove the Glock design could endure continuous automatic fire. Officially debuting in 1987, the G18 is a specialist weapon intended for users such as counter-terrorist or VIP protection units. Due to its limited practical advantages over standard pistols or submachine guns, the Glock 18 was produced in much smaller numbers than other Glock models.
